"Only Say Good Things" is challenging to review because of its deeply personal story.

However, I could not put this book down.

The quote, “playing the role of someone else’s image of you every day and every night is exhausting,” captures the raw emotions and feelings of self-doubt and low self-esteem throughout the book. The insights into the inner workings of the Playboy Mansion are both intriguing and horrifying, making for a compelling and disturbing read.

One of the biggest takeaways from this book was this importance of making a choice. This book discussed that every decision had an lasting impact and determined how life would turn out. Crystal faced multiple choices: would she stay around and hope for a ride to shuttle her to the mansion? Would she stay in the mansion or leave? When she eventually left, would she stay away from that lifestyle or go back to something familiar? She made the choice to “only say good things.” Her most powerful decision, in my opinion, was when destroyed and ripped up pictures Hef took of women. It symbolized reclaiming her agency and rejecting the objectification she endured.

Overall, I would rate this book at 4/5.

Playboy memoirs are definitely a subgenre I'm interested in, and I was intrigued when I heard Crystal was releasing a book. I think she's in an interesting place because she's done a lot of healing, but still acknowledges that it's an ongoing process, and you can see that there are still a lot of conflicting feelings. I appreciate the honesty, and listening to the audiobook made this very personal.
