This started out well enough for me. It wasn't all that exciting in the beginning, but I thought the world of Albaterra created here was beautifully imaginative. I would love to see a world like that for real. But the enjoyment faded rather quickly. When things started to finally pick up, that's when they also became predictable and remarkably boring somehow. I also really hated Tabitha in middle. I mean, really. Once past that to the end, it was a huge mix of things I liked and things I really didn't. And don't get me started on how things were constantly repeated. You don't need to tell me something that happened two chapters ago. I know, I already read it. Then there's this personal pet peeve of mine where the h is told to do something by the H and completely disregards the command because she's a stupid bitch worried about him. Let's all never mind the fact that he says it to potentially save your life. You go do what you're pride desires because he clearly can't take care of himself. Oh my gawd how I hate it when the woman doesn't listen. One other thing that has stuck with me is a very slight glitch in the story. And I mean slight, but it bugged me. See, Rex went and barricaded the two of them into the bedroom at one point. Going so far as to move huge pieces of furniture to block the door. But then later when somebody shows up at the house, they both just walk right on out that door. Did we forget the door was blocked? Or did the two of them somehow get the power to walk thru things?

Anyway. Tabitha is fleeing her life on Earth by joining a space mission. What's the mission? Well, I don't know because Tabitha doesn't know. She's just the ship's chef. One day their ship crashes on this alien world and she finds herself the sort of captive of the king of the kingdom she crashed in. I say sort of because while the rest of the crew that survived is rounded up and locked into prison cells, she spends the next two months or so living with his family...just not allowed to leave the property. Who knew she would come to love her jailer in such a short time?

Rex is one of the leaders of his people on Albaterra. His people have been watching and studying humans for a long time now and know of the danger they pose. So when human ships are spotted within their galaxy, these leaders take a vote and decided to shoot them down before they do any harm. The first one crashes in Rex's territory and he takes Tabitha as a prisoner but can't bring himself to lock her up with the others for some reason. And as the days pass, his pride and respect for her only grow as he sees her interact with his family.

But it's a huge crime for Rex to have kept her a secret. Now Tabitha must plead her own case and Rex must also plead his against charges of treason. While some of the ruling body are peaceful, there are those who are the extreme opposite and would love nothing more than to wipe out humans a whole. So the two of them go off to do whatever they can to prevent the rest of the human ships from being destroyed. With Tabitha going out to space to convince the other captains (which had me rolling my eyes so hard and so often with it's ridiculousness) and Rex going around and trying to convince the other leaders to change their vote. In the end, Tabitha literally leads one of the human ships to Rex's front door and new choices must be made. After a pretty epic bloodbath, a truce of sorts is called. But things are doubtless far from over. Rex and Tabitha might be happy together, but it's only a matter of time before more trouble is brought to Albaterra from the humans. After all, they're completely correct in saying we're a destructive, war happy race.

Gawd, I hope the next book and those after are better than this. I already have the whole damn series...
