This was a pretty enjoyable entry in the series. I liked that they gave Uhura something to do. I always appreciated them showing the chain of command and treating the Enterprise like an actual, functional unit. It added some realism to the relationship aboard.

This story would probably take place somewhere between the first and second season of the Original TV series.

Lt. Uhuru has been ordered to the USS Lexington to serve as an interpreter for the inhabitants of Rithra. Their procreation center is in danger from radiation from a nearby volcano and have requested Federation help to reinforce their shields. The Lieutenant uncovers a mystery.

Meanwhile the Enterprise is sent to find out who has been raiding the colonies in Xaridian systems. The Captain discovers that this is not mindless pillaging but that very specific objects are being stolen.

This story is focused mainly on Uhuru but it is also a Chekov story. He is a very young new ensign and is trying to find his way which at times can be amusing. The way he is written here reminds me a bit of Lt. Barclay from The Next Generation. Very smart and capable but is over anxious and is trying too hard to impress Captain Kirk. We see the beginnings of his friendship with Sulu which is given more emphasis in the books than on the screen.

Peter David had a hand in writing this and it shows. He is one of the better writers of book tie in world.
