This was my first time reading since middle school. The book holds up to the test of time. It had me audibly laughing and even crying. Would definitely recommend.

I will note that I’m biased to this book and the series as a whole since I’ve already them. Other than that, still a really great book! Adventurous, funny, and very lovable characters! Not a deep book conceptually or thematically, but certainly a great intro to a lighthearted but fun series!
Things I loved:
- Characters: so lovable and funny, you really care for them even when they are annoying and dumb
- Adventure: might be too fast for some people but it keeps things interesting
- Character development: Percy learning about his new world, understanding Annabeth, exploring Grover’s guilt
Things I didn’t like:
- Plot jumps: specifically the poodle and the plane, just too convenient but was probably fine to save time and pages
- One off adventures: sometimes the Trio’s little side adventures seem pointless i.e. Crusty’s and Lotus Casino

im so glad i finally read this book! it definitely would have been more mind blowing as a kid. im on the fence about reading any of the other ones since the tone is definitely younger than i prefer to read, but i do want to watch the series. i knew more about the golden trio than i thought (from fanart in highschool) and i really liked the pacing. the action was also spaced out well, and percy's inner monologue was really well written for his age and the type of character he is. i enjoyed their banter.
