Re-read 2024. Rating 3.5
While I can absolutely see the appeal in this book and series (the characters are brilliantly created, the storyline interesting, the humour and reinterpretation of the classic characters spot on)... there's still something here that just doesn't hit the spot for me. This is the second time I've read this book, and the second time I just feel no need to read on in the series. I can understand why so many thousands love it, but it's just not for me.

I watched the movie before reading the book, I have to admit. But it’s what drew me to the book in the first place. I love how Riordan’s narration adapts well to the mind of a twelve year old, simplistic when it needs to be but also descriptive to help the readers imagine the scene. The story... I liked the plot, but I feel it was rushed in a way. He’s twelve and seems mature in his actions. That’s my only complaint. Besides that, I really enjoyed it!

A loveable cast of characters and a world which invites your imagination to take flight even as an adult.
Percy is a bit immature and rude but in a believable and funny way. Mental health struggles and learning disabilities are reframed as strengths. It also tackles a lot of issues with parents/families which a lot of children can find relatable.
The chapters sometimes end and jump to a new scene quite quickly and each segment has a similar set-up of arriving at a location to then find trouble but it makes for a quick paced read.
