This is a book that I am revisiting as an elder teen ( eighteen :( ), and I have to say that it is truly better than I remember it to be: but I knew in the back of my mind that I was my favourite during the time when I first read it. But now I can really appreciate the book for that it is. Despite the fact that is this written and targeted for middle grade, I can say that nothing about this should be. I truly believe that there should have been more violent and gruesome scenes.

This book is much more than a child yelling at a god. It is a child taking down the government. Exactly that the people of todays day and age are doing to protect themselves from the danger that the government is putting them in.

Percy Jackson is an amazing character; at the very beginning of the book we learn that he is exactly what he doesn't want to be: a pawn. And by the end of the book, he is labelled as a hero for doing something that he was asked (forced) to do by a higher power. This book really shows the dynamics of power in situations like this and how it can still apply to everyday life, even now. Through his book we come to the realisation that while Percy is not with the gods, he does not want to dismantle them, like a certain someone. He is on the side of humanity, because that is how was raised. He will always be a hero to human-kind, but a pawn of the gods.

Growing up, Annabeth Chase was who I wanted to be. She's smart, and cool. But she is also strong, and shows young girls that you can be who you are without needing to change anything about yourself. She shows that being wise is a strength and not a "nerdy" thing. Annabeth is a character that has inspired me, and one that I have looked up to since the first time I have read the books.

Grover Underwood is often overlooked by fans as a "comic relief" character, but he is so much more than that. And while The Lightning Thief is the only book we really get of them as a trio, it explores how in depth of character they are. Grover is the backbone of this novel - he found, and protected Percy on their quest, and got his searcher's license to find Pan, but he also made the story feel real in a way that is good for children of all ages. Despite Grover being a satyr, he is the most human out of the three.

This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone. It's funny, based around Greek myths, and has so much symbolism and character for a middle grade book that could have been taken further is Rick Riordan wrote for an older audience. I'm also more then sure that it was this book that sparked my love for Greek myths, so much so that I am going to study it in University. And while some people may say "It's a children's book and should be left to them", I say that I has given me back my inner child, and continued to help me heal.

⚡️The chosen one
⚡️ Greek Mythology
⚡️ TDAH representation + dislexia

⭐️3/5
