The Woods goes...steampunk? The story has splintered enough at this point that I kept thinking, "wait, what?" It introduces one or two interesting creations but all in all it felt like ho hum.

My least favourite volume so far - Isaac is unfathomably irritating and now he's important to the plot so we're gonna be seeing more of him.

Casey is ALSO unfathomably irritating - IDK what it is with Tynion and his chronic inability to make characters that are bad but still interesting to read about. Instead I'm just bored and frustrated. Casey is basically just Clay but with a different hair colour and a different victim.

Also, what is it with bringing in the 'evil horde' and they're stylized after the Japanese empire... like... what is up with that. I'm willing to let so much go because the concept was so interesting but we never even dealt with the colonialism at the heart of New London and now the big bad is a Japanese army... oof. I will continue the series because it's completed and I want to know where it goes but dude... it's so messy.

EDIT: This is still my least favourite volume and I won't be changing my rating but having read more of the series and understood more of the thematic purpose of the characters + groups I would say to people who had the same concerns as me to continue on. It'll make more sense by the end lol.

A time jump, a new danger, a new balance of powers.

Really impressed with how Tynion has kept the story fresh, particularly the graceful way the 1 year time jump has been used to advance all of the storylines.

There seems to be a time jump from Vol. 3 to vol 4. I don’t remember the hunters in the woods coming back to the high school and where did the evil teachers get off to. I feel like I’m missing something here.

We meet an evil nazi-like army that is the 2nd party in the woods. There is also some weird plant growing in the woods that is one hell of a mind trip. It can almost kill a person after one use.

There is a lot happening in the story and I am still having a good time reading this story. There are couples breaking up and maybe some flirting going on. The kids have made a home in this strange world and they are growing up. I do wonder if they will ever get home.

I’m curious what new things will happen and how this cliffhanger will end.

This review covers the first five volumes of the series

What happens when a school in the Midwest is zapped onto another planet entirely? That’s the conceit behind The Woods which, over five volumes so far, gives a pretty solid take on the genre of a bunch of lost students having to make their way on an unfamiliar planet. We get a lot of how the individual personalities and social hierarchy impact the survival instincts of the teens on a new planet, as well as get a lot of information as to how the planet works.

The later volumes maybe even improve on the idea even moreso, especially as things tend to settle down. I’m really, really into this series and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next volume, as this is a very interesting series with a lot going for it.
