Full disclosure: I am a huge horror fan and love even terrible horror movies so the theme of this was already going to get it many stars. Lost 1 star because I was unhappy with the solution to the mystery at the end but otherwise I think this was a worthy winner of Best Horror in the Goodreads awards! Exciting, gruesome and with a (mildly) feminist tone throughout, I really enjoyed this. I was sceptical when I saw the theme and the fact it is by a male author but was really happy to see tropes being inverted and the strength of the female characters being highlighted as well as the critique of the media treatment of women found in the openings to each chapter, but in a way that was never preachy. Interest was added due to the unreliable narrator and the fact although I knew I should have so much sympathy for Lynette because of her horrific experience, I also didn't always like her.

An incredible read for any slasher fans. A great mix of deadly stakes and humor.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I read it all in one sitting (before bed which wasn’t the best idea) but I couldn’t put it down. It’s a 3.75 star for me rounded up but I think that’s probably just because of my copy. I was reading an arc so the uncorrected mistakes jarred me out of the story occasionally and towards the end there were a few very meandering sentences and paragraphs that were difficult to read through, but I’m sure these are corrected in the final copy! I was nervous starting this because I did like Sagar’s book Final Girls and they sounded SO similar but they actually weren’t at all which was a relief. I’m so glad I put that thought aside and picked this one up. The twists kept me in the dark the whole time and I love that! Highly recommend!

Fun story to read, but predictable. And it felt shallow. There wasn’t enough of a buildup (in either the plot or getting to know the characters).

If this was edited better I bet it'd be great but there was just one too many plot twists and bits that I felt didn't add enough just dragged out the tension til it was barely a simmer
