Read the Spanish version. I much preferred Casa de los Espiritus, but all the same I'm wooed by Allende's talent.

I’m glad I revisited Daughter of Fortune. I first read it as a girl of sixteen and found it rather disappointing. It has been long remembered as my least favorite Allende novel.

As a wife, mother, and adult, I was able to see this book with fresh eyes. The organization of the plot still renders it my least favorite Allende novel, but I can appreciate the marrow of the story now.

Having spent years working my way through Allende’s books, I plan to now move on to Portrait in Sepia and The House of the Spirits, following the chronological order of events of the del Valle family. Although each novel stands alone well, connecting the themes, events, and characters adds depth to each novel.
