Uważam, że „Niedźwiedź i słowik” to książka, którą czyta się raczej dla baśniowego, zimowego klimatu niż dla całej reszty. Fabuła jest dość specyficzna, przez większość książki słyszymy tylko, że nadchodzi jakieś zło. No i tak sobie nadchodzi i nadchodzi aż początkowe napięcie znika, bo ma się wrażenie, że do tej kulminacji nigdy nie dojdzie. Główną bohaterkę, Wasię, poznajemy już w chwili jej narodzin i później głównie obserwujemy ją oczami jej rodziny, sama perspektywa Wasi jest raczej mdła, dopóki dziewczyna nie staje się dorosła, co dzieje się dość nagle.
Zakończenie książki trochę wynagradza mozolne tempo, chociaż zdecydowanie wolałabym, żeby akcja była bardziej rozłożona na te 400 stron niż skumulowana na ostatnich 50 kartkach.
To co najbardziej mi przeszkadza w tej książce to przemoc wobec dzieci, po którym następuje podkreślanie, że „to dla dobra dzieci” i przecież dzieci kochają swoich rodziców a rodzice ich… Rozumiem, że to miało nawiązywać do prawdziwych baśni, ale fantasy to tak elastyczny gatunek, że można ten baśniowy klimat osiągnąć innymi zabiegami.

Ahhh, this book was so lovely! It felt like a luxuriously cozy Winter coat; and yes, I know, it's September... but I couldn't resist the pull of this book. And I'm so grateful I picked it up! It's whimsical, it's full of depth and meaning, and the writing is breathtakingly beautiful. It felt like a fairytale with just the right amount of complexity to still be unique and original, and I simply can't wait to continue the series. This book truly was special.

The characters were well developed, and the world building through fairy tales was really well done. I think the tone of the writing really added to the world and characters. I would have given it a higher rating, but the ending fell a bit flat to me and the story was predictable.
