For the first half of the book, there are some interesting ideas and advices that are good for writers. However, I found it all rather outdated and self-centered. The kinds of writing he talks about aren't as prevalent anymore. He comes across as downright pretentious towards the end when he's talking of taste, as though only some writing is actually good and the rest is trash. Different people like different things. Value is different between everyone, and he is rather narrow minded. His humor section convinced me he has no real sense of humor or understanding of it, only further confirmed by any other mentions in the rest of it. If you're looking for writing advice, this might be okay for certain things, but I would suggest looking elsewhere. It's just too dated and narrow to be applied to all the types of writers. Writing is an incredibly hard to pin down artform. There isn't any one way to do it, and anyone who tells you there is, is lying. Sometimes you have to throw out the previously stated rules and go with your gut, and there is no mention of anything like that in these pages.

This is an excellent book on all sorts of writing and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to get better at writing in general.
honestly book's writing is good, i read it halfway and stopped because the physical copy text was too small and strained my eyes :')
It is targeted at non-fiction writing, but Zinsser has a lot of tips that can readily apply to fiction writing as well. Easily a book of reference I could see myself returning to for a refresher course on the finer points of crafting stories.

This book has been a helpful guide for writing non-fiction, especially while I am working on my dissertation. While not all of the chapters in the book were useful to me as a STEM researcher, many of them were. I found the book very easy to read despite it being a reference nonfiction book, which isn't my usual cup of tea for recreational reading. I appreciated the emphasis on not adding fluff to your writing since that is my view as well. I didn't agree with all of the advice given, but much of I did. A read well worth my time.

On Writing Well is the reason I can write a 10 page paper in a day and get the highest grade in the class for it. It's a wonderful, if slow, read, and it gives the fundamentals to being more than just an OK writer.
