This one was a pretty shaky read up until about two-thirds in. It didn't have the same gravitas as the previous novels and it felt too thin. The coworker who lent this novel to me said it was his least favorite of the series and I agree. It did redeem itself after King made an appearance (of which I had a lot of trepidation and doubt) and I was left with the familiar feelings of concern and fascination with the story that the previous books gave me.
I don't know how much this novel added to the story arc (well, I guess it does answer one pressing question) but I was glad to finish it and be on my merry way to the conclusion of this awesome series.

Enjoyable, but really a stepping stone to the final book. I did not care for King's insertion of himself as a character, but understanding the weight this book carries for him, I can't be too mad at it. This is on par with the other, later books (4 and 5), but with more focus on Susannah (obviously). While there is "action" in this book, those who enjoy the first 3 may find that it lacks the level of action of those, and certainly less than Book 5. The story line definitely takes a left turn, and it's a good mouth-waterer for 7.

Originally read when it first came out.
Reread April 25, 2015. I remember this book being my least favorite in the series but I think I misremembered and that it was actually Wolves that is my least fav. After the long and often slow paced Wolves, this book seemed to fly along. Never really a dull moment in this one and the story is really moving now. Only the finale left to go and I remember that it's a doozy and my second favorite in the series next to Wizard & Glass.

I kind of misinterpreted what they meant when people said this series was very meta. I thought they only meant that the series referenced many of King's other books, I didn't quite expect Stephen King to be a character in the story.
I'm not at all disillusioned or angry about King writing himself into the story. I'm trying hard to imagine what I would do if I was writing a series like this. I think I might be tempted to do this as well. It would be extremely scary and it might take twenty drafts, but if it felt right I would go with it.

What a trip, man. I haven’t read anything this meta in a long, long time. Fun, quick read. Nothing special or outside what you’d expect of King in this era, but good nonetheless!
