An excellent book - combines the best parts of Stephen King’s horror and fantasy and sci-fi ouvre

A return to form for the series. Action-packed with some really intriguing and weird world-building. I retain my previous skepticism regarding Susannah's direction that was started in the end of Wolves of the Calla, but it's turning out more intriguing than I might have suspected. Excited to see how this all turns out in the last book.

There were too many wtf moments.

“Their situation was becoming ever harder to deny: they were characters in someone's story.”

After fighting the Wolves of the Calla, our beloved ka-tet has no time to rest and catch their breath because Susannah is nowhere to be found, ready to give birth to a creature whose origin is still unclear and possessed by a demon that has a plan for her. The group has to split and travel thought time and space to find her. Without having each other's help, and with only two beams supporting the Dark Tower, the journey of our gunslingers becomes every day more complicated...

I really enjoyed Song of Susannah, sixth book of the Dark Tower series, even though my favorite characters were separated and there was not much interactions between Roland and the others. I understand this was necessary for the story itself and to build tension before the ending of the series, but I really missed the gang united, planning their travel in front of a fire (especially the dialogues between Roland and Jake). In particular I believe Jake, Père and Oy didn't get enough space in this book, and even though I'm well aware that it can't be always perfectly split, I feel like they've been neglected here. And that's a shame because I consider them really strong characters (stronger than Eddie, for example).

Song of Susannah can be considered a sort of transitional story to book seven, but at the same time it provides so many important and cool details regarding the symbology of the DT series (19s all over the place), the origin of demons and guardians of the tower, the beams, Susannah's spirit (because with the whole Detta/Odetta business, I feel like her true self was not clearly shown yet), a reminder that Jake is a gunslinger but also still a boy with unprocessed feelings, and then of course... that big meta section of the book. After book 5 I expected to see again the name of Stephen King in these books... but not Stephen King himself! And reading about him meeting his own characters was one of the coolest thing I had the absolute pleasure to experience!

Let's not forget to mention that this book ends with a cliffhanger. And what a cliffhanger! The entire last chapter, where we see Susannah as main characters, was simply incredible.
King's writing is again charmingly beautiful, he truly is a master in building a story and keeping the reader glued to his pages. I can't wait to read the last book but at the same time I don't want to!
I think I will have a short break, I don't want this to end just yet.
4 stars.

The Dark Tower saga moves into it's conclusion in, quit possibly, the strangest entry yet. Stephen King speaks true when he calls the Dark Tower his "overstory." Things are coming together in a strange and violent mixing of worlds and genres.
