This is my favorite book currently. I think the plot device and this modern, South Asian take on magical realism and religious allegory is so smart and so engaging. I learned something about the Sri Lankan civil war and was hooked on the plot and characters.

This book was the most challenging of my 2023 reads thus far but also rewarding. The book is written in the second person narrative (main character is addressed as “you” for the entirety of the novel) which I found hard to grasp for the first third of the novel, the middle dragged a bit but the last third really accelerated to a wonderful finish. The story of a gay Sri Lankan war photographer set in the 1980’s filled with magical realism was so interesting but takes a dedicated mindset to finish. Worth the work! I give it 3.8 stars rounded up.

This was the best audiobook I have ever listened to. I liked the book itself a lot, but perhaps the reason why I enjoyed it so much and that it had a great impact on me was Shivantha Wijesinha's incredible narration.
