The Catch is the world's biggest reality show and the four remaining ladies, Renee, Amanda, Vanessa and Lilah-Mae along with the eligible “catch”, Jeremy, arrive on a remote wooded island for the final.

But the island holds a secret and the final might be their last chance at life.

This is remarkable, a queer horror laced with dark humour about a reality show like Love Island or The Bachelor that turns into a creature feature. Most of the contestants are self obsessed media darlings who only care about their image, likes and aesthetic. The production team are jaded and conniving, feeding them secrets about each other to get the dramatic reaction the show and viewers feeds on. The island is beautiful and isolated, the locals friendly and it turns out, very protective of their home and its special resident.

The horror is mild I feel but the story is so good and it is a really quick read. Never read anything like it but I loved it!

February 2024:
Bumping up to a 4 star. After a really good book club discussion I think I appreciate this book a lot more. It's a good time and has so many scenes that are just impeccably written.

May 2023:

3.5
Hmm...I'm just not sure I got this. I thought the dialogue and the intrigue of the whole thing were wonderful and I was engaged enough throughout to give it a 3.5, but it felt like there should have been more to it. It ramped up to something really weird and interesting and different and then just kind of ended. I felt there was a lot more potential here and I would have loved another 100 pages or so.

I really liked the main story! I found the chapters that were in message board and letter format pulled me out of the story ymmv.

Renee, Vanessa, Lilah-Mae, & Amanda are the last four contestants in the dating reality show 'The Catch', & they head to Otters Island with 'catch' Jeremy, alongside the filming crew. The island used to be a popular destination until the 1990s with the disappearance of three women who were hiking on the island. After this, tourism died down & the producers of the show grab the opportunity to film the finale & save some cash into the bargain. As soon as they arrive to film the 'Elimination Event', strange shadowy sightings & the feeling of being watched leads Renee to realise that the island is hiding a secret that could see them all eliminated for real.

The first half of the book is a great parody of shows like the 'The Bachelor' (it's literally called The Catch) & portrays the backstabbing, fights, & manipulation of what the audience sees that most of us imagine goes on behind the scenes. I felt that this part worked really well & the reader gradually sees that there is much more going on beneath the surface for each of the female characters. The second half got a little weird as characters started dropping like flies. It was an entertaining yet thoroughly strange read but I found the ending a little rushed.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Faber & Faber, for the opportunity to read an ARC. I am voluntarily giving an honest review.

I think this review will be better said in the simplest of terms: WOW.
The story is captivating and thought provoking, dark and horrible, but also loving and delightful. I wish I could read this book over again for the first time a million times over. I haven’t read what I deem a 5 star book in a while, but I’m happy because it lead me to this weird unbelievable masterpiece.
This is a book that will be a cult classic for years to come. I smell a movie deal in the not so distant future.

Crying score: If Patricia told me to I would.
