What starts as a cross between Heathers and Dead Poets Society with Daria-esque characters, turns into a  mind-twisting tale where you’re not quite sure if you’re in a waking nightmare or not. Samantha’s unfortunate family life and outsider-ness lends itself to the underlying theme of “if you could create the perfect companion, would everything really be fixed?”
There’s so much to this book. I think I’ll revisit it. This feels like a Donnie Darko rewatch where you’ll find something new on each read.

What kind of a fever dream was that, Bunny?

Clueless meets Mean Girls meets a really bad trip, I could not put this down. Compulsive, claustrophobic, compelling and downright bizarre. I loved it.

This book was a trip but I loved it. Yes, it was confusing at times. Yes, it felt like a fever dream. And yes, even though I figured out some of the twists before they happened, I am still at a bit of a loss how to describe this book.

Darkly funny and deeply sad. At times also eerie, ominous, and disorienting in the best kind of way. A take on horror, creativity, loneliness, and the academic world that I didn’t know I needed. The ending was rather ambiguous, and I’m still digesting whether I liked how things wrapped up, but overall it was a really engaging ride!

Is every girl at least a little gay for their best friend? Middle is a little boring, gets really exciting at about 4/5 through the book. From the tango class onward, I had a feeling about Ava and I was about fifty percent right. If this is what it takes to get an MFA, count me out.

Crazy-scary-sad is the perfect way to describe this book.  I'm a fan of the prose - the proems. Hate bouquet. Fuck you flower. Mouth sounds.

This book defied all my initial expectations but felt quite disjointed. I wish it flowed more smoothly. I nearly lost interest halfway through when Samantha's (the MC) pity party kind of felt too much. Still, I recommend it just because Mona Awad's writing style is fun to read!
