I think this is the first book by Baldacci where he had two female leads and I loved it!
On the one hand we have Mickey Gibson, named after a famous baseball player, who is a divorced mom of two kids ages 3 and 2. She spent the first half of her career as a cop but now she works remotely from home for a private investigating firm. Now on the other hand, we have Clarisse who is a complete mystery. She spends most of her days switching out her disguises so her clients and those she accidentally interacts with have no idea who she truly is. However, when a rich man with criminal ties ends up dead, the two women are forced to work together in unexpected ways.
Once again, this was a unique mystery/thriller brought to us by Baldacci. I absolutely didn’t like Clarisse at first but the dynamic she brought to the story made it very intriguing. It was fun figuring out who she really was and I liked the collaboration that took place between the two women. Great story, fascinating characters, and interesting reveals - 4 stars!

3 Stars. Remarkably average for Baldacci. Even if it was a series starter.Interestingly, I think that Mickey and Francine have a future now that we know them. I’d definitely read another one if they were working together from the beginning now that they are friends. The mystery was solid but not up to his standards. Hopefully he does another with these two and meets his standard.

An average thriller from Baldacci. The characters are somewhat thin and not that believable, specially Clarisse, who is like all sorts of things and omnipotent and omnipresent till she is not. Too many repetitive questions pop up in the mind of the protagonist Mickey Gibson which do nothing to add to the plot but it improves in the second half as the plot emerges in more clarity.
The first half, or so, of the book was not very good. I debated not finishing the book. I set it down for a few days and read a couple of books in the meantime. When I picked it back up within a few chapters it got a lot better. But, the story had several different plots that were tangentially related. One of the plots was wrapped up, but the other still hanging. That plot got resolved, but the ending was not satisfying.
I really like his Amos Decker novels, one of my overall favorite characters. I just felt this book didn't live up to Baldacci's other novels.
