I've been excited about this book ever since it was published. Let's hope it lives up to the hype.
Well after 60 pages, I gave up on it. Definitely not worth the hype...IMHO.

Had heard good things about this book. Didn't find them. Throughout the story, all I wanted to do was slap the characters for their ignorance/neediness and wonder why I continued to read the book. Both desires were easily answered: you can't smack fictitious characters and I continued to read, because I spent $ on the book. Glad it is finished and I can move on.
I started out really liking this book, and it just veered toward the territory of "too strange" toward the end. Overall, I really like the main character, Golden Richards. The way the story was told was interesting, rotating between first-person chapters (Golden, fourth wife Trish, son Rusty) and additional, italicized chapters narrated by an omniscient storyteller speaking in the third person.
I had never read or watched anything about polygamy and plural wives before, and therefor I thought this was an interesting book. I'm not sure how accurate a picture I have of the entire phenomenon. But it was a good read, something that I was able to immerse myself in.

Long - definitely skimmable in sections, but a marvelously in-depth peek at the realities of plural marriage in current society.
This is a big book featuring a big protagonist with a big family. The book starts out very slow, and is intimidating (the family tree at the front of the book spells out just how many characters there are), but Udall's storytelling skills pull you through the first half and reward you in the second.
This could have been a book of oddities, since it centers mostly around Mormons and brothels, but Udall not only never makes these folks into freaks , he makes you see each one of them - good and bad (and all the actors have both good and bad characteristics) as human beings.
Don't be intimidated by the large cast - most of the Mormon kiddies only make brief cameos.

So far this book is super good but have a feeling the ending is going to be a big disappointment.

The title alone is an oxymoron. :) It read like a Greek tragedy.
