I found myself chuckling throughout most of the book! It was full of so many unexpected little twists and turns that I was never sure exactly where things were going...totally fun. The chewing gum incident just about killed me.

loved this book - funny, touching, interesting look at a "nontraditional" family.

I was surprised how much I liked this book. It was sad, funny, and very real. As Rusty would say, many many people were thoroughly "gypped" in this story, but Udall wraps you into this unlikely life in a way I didn't think possible. Ultimately of course, it's just life, my life, their lives, all life.

This could have been a fantastic book if the first 300 pages was instead only 50 pages. The second 300 pages were quite good, but seriously... how many people are going to read 300 pages of sucktastic to get to the "good" (ok, not terrible) stuff?

Keep with this one...took me a while and I read in too many small chunks when I should have devoured it.

I think I would actually give this book 4.5 stars, but I'm rounding up. This was a fantastic piece of story-telling. For a long book (600 pages), it read so quickly that I forgot that the novel itself is a bit of an undertaking. I learned a lot about polygamist communities through this novel and, like all good books do, this made me really sympathize which characters on whom I would normally pass judgment quickly. The bonus feature are the chapters written about Rusty, "the family terrorist." I found his voice sad, but also absolutely hilarious, and I would say I laughed out loud during his chapters every minute or so! Read it!

Good story about the secrets people keep, and the characters just happen to be in a polygamist family.

3 1/2 stars.

I wish the whole book was about Rusty who was, easily, the funniest and most heartbreaking character. The father Golden and the wives tended to be annoying at times and difficult to relate to. I don't understand why anyone would want to be in a polygamist relationship and why, for gods sakes they have to have so many children. WTF people???

This book just trudged on and on, without anything really happening. Udall has an interesting concept - being lonely in a literal crowd - and some interesting characters, but doesn't really deliver. One reviewer calls his writing style "casual"; I didn't think it did the story justice. I seriously considered chucking this one, but finished it just to see how it ended.

I really enjoyed this book, which has a little bit of everything--drama, love, humor, and sadness. I was somewhat disappointed by the ending but really liked it as a whole.
