““Don’t you know how much I like you?” My voice is barely above a whisper. “You’re all I fucking think about, all the time. I’d do anything you asked, Sophie, if only you…” I stop to brush my hand back through my hair. It’s damp with sweat. “If you were with me, you could have anything you wanted”

“And I know that I fucked up, Sophie, and you get to hate me if you want to—I understand why you would. I’ve been a shitty person, I’ve done shitty things because I was desperate and stupid and didn’t grow a backbone when I should have. And you can hate me for all that—I hate me for it too. But you don’t get to ignore how I feel or pretend you don’t know. You know, now. You don’t get to explain away my feelings or analyse me like your Hamlet or Captain Wentworth. I’m a real human being—sometimes not a great one—with real feelings. And I like you, really a fucking lot. I want to take you on dates, I want to go to parties with you and be the one who gets your drinks. I want to kiss you and I want to fuck you face to face, and I want you to say my name when you come. I don’t want to be your practice run at having a stupid American boyfriend. I want to be your actual stupid American boyfriend”

Review: So this wasn’t as bad as I thought, but it isn’t good either. I thought it was going to be very cringey and very bad, but for a debut, the writing is not that bad. But I also feel like it was way too lengthy. I had to literally skim-read it because there were just too many unnecessary details dragging the plot.

I do not understand why the heroine, was acting all timid and couldn’t even look most ppl in the eye especially when the hero and his friends csme spouting bullshit about her. And time and time again, the hero keeps singing tunes about how she is so strong and always stands up for herself and never takes shit from anyone, when for the majority of the book she is always being a doormat. And for someone who’s labeled as uptight and stuck-up, she really is spineless.

The hero is sort of a dumb fart, delulu, stupid, at times in an adorable way. He’s like a dog, you know, cute at times. He’s so stupid, he’s madly in love with her. But the way sometimes he believes he’s complimenting her by saying things like how she’s as starched as librarian and her face like that etc 💀😭 Besides that, there’s not much about him, to be honest.  The heroine, she’s plain boring, literally has no personality whatsoever. Like one minute the hero is emotionally abusing her and insulting her in front of his friends, and the next minute he looks at her and she’s kissing him. She’s so fucking stupid. Idiotic. The girl was getting on my nerves.

And you know, this one time when the hero cornered her, just to get rid of him, she started undressing herself so that he could fuck her and finally be done with it. This is her logic? Is that how her logic works? So just for this, she would allow him, even anyone else, to do this to her if they could finally leave her alone? The fuck are you on, girl?

Also, he says things like, in spite of how cruel she is, I still want to please her.
Cruel? I have to laugh. The only time I saw this girl stand up for herself was when the hero was telling his friend Zack how the heroine told him no and said: “you don’t even care what that means, do you? If I teach you one last thing, it is the meaning of the word. It means you don’t get what you want. And then she walked away.”

And I like how the hero was self-aware. He knows he’s stupid, and he even admits it himself, “I don’t even know what that is, you know I’m stupid.” The heroine was talking about Arthur in legends and how she will break romances.

Overall, it  was fun, mainly because of hero tho he acted whiny and childish the majority of the book, as if the things are between them cuz of someone else, and not him. But the heroine literally has no self-respect. I don’t know, I feel like the author was gaslighting me and making me believe that the heroine is really someone who’s uptight and stuck-up and always standing up for herself, and there’s nothing like that in her at all. It’s not even there in the book.

Side note: has bully trope too.

Ending: incomplete, and the rest of the story will be followed in the last Book of  the series.
