adventurous mysterious fast-paced

This review comes from my blog: https://livemanylives.wordpress.com/

I have arrived late to the Lori Anderson party, Deep Dirty Truth being the third novel in this series, but it only took a few pages for me to be caught up in this pulsating thriller. Steph Broadribb unleashes her story at a ferocious pace as each chapter ticks off a few more minutes in this real time tale.

Lori is a bounty hunter and the former wife of a mobster. Her ex-husband beat her into a new life and she in turn shot him into an afterlife. Years later, the family boss wants to even up the score but, rather than just take an eye for an eye, he has an offer to make. A son saved to replace a son lost, or maybe not, the race is on to save her family but it quickly becomes clear not everything is as straightforward as it might first have seemed.

This is a blockbuster novel; the combined resources of the Miami mob and the FBI turned on a fierce mother determined to protect her family, in a race against time that has your heart rate soaring. The action is relentless, but an enjoyable depth of characterisation rounds the edges of this story and builds an attachment to the key players on all sides.

Lori is a likeable and believable central character who sits engagingly between hardened bounty hunter and loving mother. Her relationship with JT is complex and vulnerable as they both try to come to terms with fragile trust building in the midst of their chaotic lifestyles. Dakota adds an extra layer to their decision making, whilst friends and foes alike are three-dimensional and (barring one gruesome exception) satisfying shades of grey, rather than simplistic black and white.

It didn’t matter at all that I hadn’t read the previous instalments, this is a standalone story that a newcomer can quickly find their way into. It matters to me now though, Lori Anderson has me in her clutches and I’ve no intention of wrestling free.

Well, Lori is back at being her badass self! From the mob to running amuck the Everglades! This was fast paced and I enjoyed it! Thanks to Orenda for this early copy! #teamLori

I love me a good old detective drama on TV, especially old episodes or Morse or Frost, because you can jump in and enjoy them at any point. You see they are easy enough to follow that even though you know these characters have had many cases (and episodes) you are not excluded due to that. They also don’t bore long time watchers with never ending flashbacks and recaps. Their is a trust in you the reader to be able to discover the information that you need to enjoy the book.

Although set in America, Deep Dirty Truth really did feel as if it payed homage to those great British detective dramas of my childhood.

Lori Anderson is a kick-ass bounty hunter and during the course of her job it is fair to say that she has made an enemy or two. What I loved about this book is that the author forces us the reader to see the many shades of grey within a decision. Lori has upheld the law during her career, yet now she is faced with breaking it to keep her family safe. This is one of those plots where it is easy to say, well I would do this in that situation, however the reality is so very very different. The author captures that brilliantly.

The writing is so fast paced that you literally fly through the plot by the seat of your pants. Breathless with anticipation and both desperate and fearful to know what the next page will bring. Going back to my fave detective dramas this would make an excellent one. (Seriously someone bring Lori Anderson to Netflix!)

The dialogue is fast paced yet realistic, nothing is too wordy nor is it snappy to the point of giving you whiplash. The narrative is emotive and you dragged into the plot by the hair, you absolutely need to know what happens to these characters by the end of the first chapter.

I could wax lyrical about the various characters, but its Lori who is the protagonist and holy fuck nuggets she is one hell of a woman. A bounty hunter, a single mom, and a total badass. Seriously this is a woman who has seen and experienced it all yet is still a loving mother. A success in her field and yet not a total bitch. It’s not often we are shown the difficulties of being a single working mother alongside a truly independent strong (non man hating) woman. I am maybe not a bounty hunter yet she was definitely a woman I could wholeheartedly relate to.

As I joined the series on this book, would I have benefited from reading the previous to books before this one? Maybe.

Did it detract from my enjoyment of Deep Dirty Truth because I hadn’t? Fuck no!

*****

I was invited on the blog tour for Deep Dirty Truth by Anne at Random Things Blog Tours and was provided a paperback copy to read. I received this product for free in return for providing my honest and unbiased review. I received no other compensation. All opinions expressed are truthful and 100% my own. I would like to thank her for the opportunity to read and review this book.

When you start one of Lori’s adventures, you know that there will be action, bullets and an addictive plot to keep any reader glued to every page of the story till the end; because if you haven’t read any of the Lori Anderson adventures, what are you waiting for?
Lori’s adventures are all connected, and this one maybe is the most crucial book of the stories so far, after the two previous books with a lot of twisted stories, she will have to face her past, the mob will want “eye for an eye” for her husband’s death. And she will have to go against her own rules if she wants to keep her family safe; but Lori will never disappoint her fans. She is brave, bold and loyal to her loved ones; she is not perfect, but at every turn she has to face she wakes up stronger and ready to fight again, she is just a fiction character but we should remember her in our worst moments, even if our life is difficult, we never have to resign to fight!
When I start reading one of the Lori’s books I try not to read the argument before, simply enter to the story and let the adrenaline flow through my body page after page, I can assure you you’ll not get bored! That’s why I am not talking much about this book’s plot, I don’t want to do any spoilers! This case is more personal than the others, and we’ll read more about the relation between JT (Lori’s partner) and her daughter Dakota, there’s friendship and some drops of romance in the book too, but a lot of bullets and blood.
Ready to get deep dirty before discovering the truth?

Clammy hands, pulse racing, energy tank empty. Am I ill? No! These are the symptoms of the aftermath of reading Deep Dirty Truth because Lori Anderson is back with a BANG!

In this third instalment, Lori is forced to make a deal with the devil. I mean, the mob. This would be the Old Man, who’s been after Lori since her husband Tommy died. If it wasn’t clear from this little tidbit, you should really read the previous books if you haven’t done so already. Anyway, the FBI have the mob’s “numbers man”, Carlton North, in custody. If Lori can find him and bring him back to the mob’s compound, the price on her head and the heads of JT and Dakota will be removed.

Cue a bunch of backstabbing, lies and deceit. I mean, if you can’t trust the mob, who can you trust? Oh … wait. Never mind. From quite early on, you’re left with this sinking feeling of “this is not going to go well”. And guess what? It doesn’t! But what a bloody awesome and thrilling ride it is! The mob, gators, high-speed boat chases, kayaks, shoot-outs … what more could you possibly want?!

Deep Dirty Truth is action-packed from the word go! There were times I felt like asking for a time-out so I could have a moment to catch my breath. Yet, with a heartbeat going faster and faster and hands gripping the book ever tighter, I couldn’t stop reading. It left me utterly exhausted but oh so incredibly satisfied.

Lori remains one of the most awesome female main characters in the book world right now. She’s fierce, determined, resourceful and quick to think on her feet. She is always able to pull herself back up after being knocked down, ready to kick some serious ass and always ready to do whatever it takes to keep her family safe. Speaking of her family, I love how the relationship between JT and Dakota is developing. Such a pleasure to behold and it often put a huge smile on my face.

This series has been a total blast from the very first book and Deep Dirty Truth is without a doubt THE BEST ONE YET! Oh yes! I said it! Fast-paced, with characters to get invested in and root for and edge-of-your-seat action galore, this is sheer entertainment of the highest level! Stock up on snacks and maybe an oxygen tank and enjoy the rollercoaster ride! Your legs may feel like jelly at the end of it, but it’ll be worth it!
