I was hoping I’d enjoy this more than Dune but I’m just not. I hate the writing and I’m filled with dread every time I try to pick it up, so it’s got to go.

Dune Messiah jumps twelve years ahead of Dune and then seamlessly continues the story. Paul is now emperor and his sister is his prophet, each with their own cult. People are conquering the galaxy in their name, killing any who don't submit. Paul is now living his nightmare of being a tyrant worse than his predecessor. Whatever will he do?

All the praises of Dune remain (narrative style, characters, worldbuilding, etc.). Messiah simply concludes the story, while also leaving the door open for more. Although Gurney is missing for some reason.

New cultures are introduced and fancy-space magic through them. Undead and shapeshifters are now a thing and both are used excellently in the conspiracy to overthrow Paul. Interestingly enough, Paul wants the exact same thing as the antagonists: His downfall. The trick is how to not make himself a martyr and increase the violence of the jihad in process. Loved seeing this as both parties want the same thing, but have different and conflicting methods of getting there. It was really fun when you were in both of their heads at the same time as they tried to play against each other.

The most interesting tool used was a dead friend, returned to the land of the living... kinda. He has the body of Paul's friend, some of his memories and personality, but is a completely different person. Duncan Idaho is, afterall, dead. How this relationship plays out was fascinating to see.

The biggest highlight was the way Herbert used Paul's prophecy. Unfortunately, I cannot go into without heavy spoilers. Great read! Awesome follow-up to Dune that continues the greatness of the first book. If you loved Dune, you'll love this.
