I kept waiting for something to happen...

I really expected more from the plot, since it claimed to be a "queer Rapunzel retelling". Aside from the fact that Ava had very long hair, there was nothing Rapunzel about this book. The build-up to the climax was unnecessarily stretched out and made the book feel like a chore.

I enjoyed this story! The characters fell a little flat at times, but I've come to expect that with most YA books. I liked the enemies to lovers trope, and overall it was a fun read.

This book was VERY cheesy and over the top but in the end I did like it. The general story and ideas were intriguing, even if I didn't love the writing and execution of it.

i was very much enjoying this book and the messed up relationship and the misunderstandings between ava and kaye but at some point it got weird and dragged off and unrealistic. the writing is very bland and boring too and the characters don’t have much depth to them.

also since its a rapunzel retelling i was expecting more on that but was disappointed when there was barely anything about it? like she mentions her hair an awful lot which is how i even realized its supposed to be a rapunzel retelling but at the same time her hair has no real relevance and she cuts it off pretty soon into the book.

what annoyed me the most in this book is the fact that vampires are treated like a race and it very much feels like the author got the inspiration for writing these vampires from real life racism and certain events that have happened in the past. kaye constantly calls ava a ‘bloodsucker’ a word thats treated like a racial slur to which ava freezes up. while this is happening theres also actual racism in the book which the two mc’s do face. ava tries to convince kaye that the discrimination of vampires and the actual racism happening are the same thing and it really made me annoyed especially because its mentioned many times. you can’t write a fantasy species and compare it to actual racism which people face in real life.

Honestly I believe I am in a reading slump. I had enjoyed this book but the whole time I felt unsatisfied with it. I enjoyed the characters and the setting though I just wish there was more.
