Well crafted characters that keep you wanting to live in their heads. A shadowy cult that uses dark magic in a terrifying fashion. Worshiping a destructive hungry god. This book is deep and dark and sensitive and scary. It’s got a lot going for it. I found the segments to be overlong, and hated not being able to finish an entire segment in a sitting. But, the character work, descriptions, terror, and heartache made it worth it.

Awesome book in a genre that I am new to. I just love the tone and mystery of the book. The characters and plot are a little more flat though.

I loved it but I’m also underwhelmed…
I loved Mariana Enriquez’ other books (Dangers of smoking in bed and things we lost in the fire) so I think I was just expecting so much more. I wanted more darkness and more depth and despite its length I don’t think this had the complexity and depth that I was expecting.
These characters although I enjoyed reading about (particularly Gaspar) they felt rather detached for some reason and just a little lifeless as a whole. I think the best characters were the younger ones: Gaspar and his friends. I loved their friendship. I did however think the father and son relationship was so incredibly interesting to read.
I found the story started to drag in the middle section and was very slow to get into and additionally elements of The Order felt repetitive especially given we had 700 pages of very little development in the “magic system”, again, just highlighting for me it just didn’t have as much depth as I was hoping for.
And although this review seems incredibly negative I actually really did love the book and the above is more just the few reasons why I just couldn’t give this one a 5 star because this book and her writing is just stunning.
