I started this book as the audiobook, but got so bored halfway through I picked up the physical book from the library. The audiobook was so slow, the physical book was much better. The buildup at the beginning was unbelievably slow, but I think (?) it was worth it in the end. The story is dark and haunting. I liked the ambiguous ending, though I feel like I don’t totally understand everything that happened.

I loved this book.

It's about a man who plays an important part in an international cult and can do powerful magic that is trying to save his son from this cult. Most of the book follows the POV of the son and his friends as they grow up and strange things happen around them.

The translation is very well written. It has excellent prose that describes every scene in a way that really sucks you in. Even though this novel is quite long, it didn't feel as long as other books of this size that I've read.

I found the plot, events and characters very intriguing. All the cult, magic and demon aspects were very interesting, though also very dark and grim so definitely check out content warnings if you are sensitive to darker themes. A lot of fucked up things happen in this (and I love it).

I liked how the author incorporated the story into the whole political background in Argentina at the time of the setting so that everything feels very grounded in reality.

Polyamory, bisexuality and the gay scene and HIV are big themes of this book as well. There are a bunch of explicit scenes.

I liked the characters a lot. They felt like real, flawed people and I still found them very interesting even if they acted out or did questionable things.

The pacing is slow and there's a bit of a lull in the middle where it switches to some different POVs, but overall I didn't mind.

My only small gripe with this book was that I found the ending a little unsatisfying. I can't really think of a better way the author could have wrapped it up in this amount of pages but somehow I found it a bit anticlimactic.

Still, this was an excellent read and one of my favorites this year.
