"If the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts, then my soul was Scarlet."

I absolutely loved this book.I have to keep putting it down so it lasts longer.
The family dynamic feels so authentic, the strong love they have for each is so obvious.
Scarlet ok wow.. so strong and stubborn, but so vulnerable I just wanted to hug her.
Billy. Gah. I loved him. BEST BROTHER my heart literally hurts for him.

Scarlet and Billy... angsty slow burn exllecance. I loved their past, the banter, how their friendship and relationship progressed. No one deserves a happy ending more than the two of them.

It was paced well. And written well. And all around AMAZING! Seriously, can you tell how much I loved this book?!?

Moving and Fabulous

Moving and fabulous. I loved reading this origin story because it answered so many questions. I was nervous due to the trigger warnings but it was so well done with no unnecessary details that it just made me feel even more for these characters that have become so real. Well done Penny Reid!!

I knew, getting into this one, that it was going to break my heart. And it did. I definitely cried a couple of times, and it’s been a while since the book is had that effect on me. But it was also an incredibly beautiful story.
I totally have the urge to go back and read all of the other Winston Brothers books, now, and goodness I absolutely *cannot wait* for the next book to come out…
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Penny Reid rarely ever disappoints me. Especially when it comes to the WB series. Few people deserve a happy ending like Billy and Scarlet...Claire ;)

I finished the audio last night. Ugh. Just so much laughing and crying and wishing Joy Nash & Cris Brinkley could follow me around all day and talk to me about ALL THE THINGS. (But mostly Cletus

This is technically the 6th book in the Winston Brothers series but it takes place well-before the first book of the series in the timeline.

One thing I really enjoyed about it was the way it helped give you an idea of the all the Winston's family member's personalities as children and teens. It added some really nice context for me personally.

That said, while I really enjoyed this book, it was a real emotional rollercoaster. There is a lot of emotional turmoil rooted in very real and troubling home-life issues. I think it helped flesh out hold history that is mentioned in passing in other books, and it really did give important backstory to Billy Winston, who is such a stoic and often enigmatic character in the other books in the series.

Trigger Warning: This book does contain descriptions of violence and abuse of teenagers, that some might find disturbing.

I'm glad Beard Necessities is only a couple of weeks away, and we already know that Billy and Claire will get their happily ever after, because that was pretty much as heartbreaking as expected. Heartbreaking and hard to read
Spoiler(even with all of the physically awful things that happen, Jethro in his scumbag days was still the hardest part for me)
, but also lovely, and hopeful, and sometimes funny
Spoiler(Beau and Duane as small people was a crack-up)
.

Penny Reid's plotting of this series still knocks me over with every book, as she draws together the breadcrumbs that have been left in all of the prior books about this particular part of the Winston's history -
Spoilere.g. Billy's broken legs, Cletus's dog and how he becomes more suspicious of people around him, Roscoe's fairy in the backyard
. Seriously, don't know how she does it - this is such an intricately drawn world with real personalities.

I agree with other reviewers that both Billy and Claire's voices read significantly older than 16 and 14, which is why I'm knocking off a star. . . . but overall this continues to be one of my favourite series of all time. Bring on the next!
