genre: realistic?

summary: Primrose is left her small home town when her parents are lost/dead at sea. with high hopes that they will return, Primrose bounces between her eccentric neighbor and her recently discovered uncle. she likes to cook and bonds with the owner of the local diner.

my review: not newberry worthy but entertaining. but i felt almost like i was reading pippi longstocking without as much shenanigans. i felt like the eccentric townsfolk thing was a little forced (minus the owner of the girl with the red swing <3ed her)...it had a small town sitcomish feel

I expected to like this book much more than I actually did. So much of it is completely unbelievable including the ending. I was just glad to finish it and move on. I'm surprised it's a Sonlight title (Level J) *and* a Newbery Honor book.

Flat characters with no plot. Quick read, but not a good one.

This was completely charming. A former roommate of mine gave this to me because I made a lot of waffles. I can't wait to try out some of the recipes (they are not anything high brow and the instructions are just like if someone was teaching you in their kitchen, too!)

I tried to rate this how I would have felt about it as a kid. It was super cute and so quirky. I enjoyed the life lessons and bigger picture things. I don’t think it would have been my favorite growing up, but I would have enjoyed it.

P.S. everyone needs a Bert and Evie in their lives.

It’s pretty meh but saved itself with one or two really heartfelt scenes

I love how ridiculous and funny this book is! Every character and chapter has a hint of the absurd in them. Love the recipe at the end of each chapter too!
