Dated but amazing when you think of what they did and when they did it. Recommended.
Sort of the Seinfeld of science fiction, i.e. ripped off so pervasively that today it feels derivative even though it's the original. An incredible feat of imagination, only makes me sadder that we never got to see Jodorowsky's Dune
This is a wildly ambitious but fatally flawed masterwork. Some readers will feel totally alienated from it due to it's numerous flaws, and others will be totally captivated by it's incredible energy.
I think this book feels hard to define because we can tell it is influential on cyberpunk but it is not really concerned about the kinds of things most cyberpunk is really interested in. Realizing this, maybe it becomes possible to actually describe the Incal: an allegorical work of science fiction which is attempting to tackle ideas from philosophy and eastern religion from a kind of new age perspective, and perhaps, thru the haze of some recreational substances.
It's not clear that Jodorowsky ever actually manages to say something really profound about these traditions that he is pulling from. Perhaps he does not even truly manage to say something coherent about them. But, acknowledging that what we are seeing is mainly someone playing with the ideas and seeing where they go, I think it is nevertheless an extremely noble effort. Perhaps more important than that, if you get carried away by it's energy, it is a fun spectacle.

The art here is definitely 5-stars, but the story is probably more like a 3 for me. (I stalled out in the middle somewhere and it took a while for me to get back into it.) Still, definitely glad I read this.

Visually there is some of the greatest stuff ever created in this series, unfortunately the story and characters are the most paint by number space opera pulp where most problems are solved within a page
