Finishing to read this immense work is a feat that leaves one with a sense of accomplishment, new understanding of the last 40 years of sci-fi cinema and literature and just a bit of bitter taste.
The visuals by Moebius are astounding and one can clearly see how they went on to seed not only obvious descendants such as Blade Runner and The Fifth Element, but even a more general visual zeitgeist for sci-fi, fantasy and mystical representations.
The story is especially fun for those of us who understand a bit of the Tarot and Alchemy symbolisms and how these relate to the peculiar story structure.
But the bitter that remains is exactly in how much time in the story is spent remarking how corrupt politicians are and how "there is no time!" and how little is spent detailing all that could be born of such visual and symbolic wealth.
Still indeed a seminal work. Just look at the first scene in the comic and the first scene in Attack of the Clones.

One of my favorite comics. Jodorowsky's particular brand of bizarre haphazard metaphysical sci-fi is matched perfectly by Moebius' preternatural draftsmanship and imagination. These two toss together absurdly deep concepts with cheesy puns and pulpy sex/violence, and it just ends up working somehow. It's a silly masterpiece.

I'll be honest, I finally got around to reading this classic only after having seen Frank Pavich's documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. I'd heard of Jodo and his El Topo, and you can't be any kind of comics fan without having at least heard the name Mœbius. Still, I came late to this particular party.
It's absolutely true what people have said--you can literally pick out the bits that have been used in any number of sci-fi films over the past 30 years. I'd never read The Incal, but every one of Mœbius's meticulously drawn panels seemed familiar. Jodo's writing didn't disappoint either--it's a good example of a writer weaving his beliefs into a story while avoiding, IMO, turning the work into a tract.

Oof. Really wishing I could give separate reviews for the art and story for this one. Illustrator Jean Giraud (Moebius) is a genius and his work with The Incal is utterly engrossing. It's a feast for the eyes. The story just can't hold a candle to it.
3.5 stars. For sheer imagination this book would definitively get 5 stars, the illustrations by Moebius really pop from the page, but the overall storyline is way too rambling.
Wow. The psychedelic sci-fi phantasmagoria of my dreams. Now I don't ever have to try LSD, cause I've read this.
