I only read this out of curiousity. Now I know, but I'm curious to read a taste of his more recent work to see how he's matured.

I wouldn't consider this a must-read book by any means, but I don't feel the scorn for it that some others do. The audiobook was the way to go. A lot of the lines did land with me because of the narrator's excellent delivery.

challenging dark emotional sad medium-paced

3.0

Absolutely chaotic, vomitous, spewing forth of words. An anxiety filled, stream of consciousness memoir that spares no one, not even the author himself.

Referred to Indigenous Australians as ‘savages’
Compared the white 20 year old boy (the author)  raising his young brother to a ‘black single mother’ because he was angry
Had a scene where the main character (the author) was caught on the beach having sex by a bunch of teens, the character started referring to them as ‘Mexicans’ for no apparent reason, threatened to have their ‘green cards’ revoked because they stole his wallet (even though they didn’t) and sent the cops after them
