I can't really explain why this book didn't work for me -- Chernobyl and time travel seemed like a potent combination -- but somehow it didn't. Too pat, maybe, and I didn't love the way it was written.

Expansive and emotional speculative historical fiction.

Yeah, I DNF.

I love time travel, and this should have been right up my street, but everything just felt so . . . forced. Constantly taken out of the story by the total lack of subtlety or nuance as well as by the transparent marketing strategy used to sell it.

ed. to add: It felt like I was consuming a product rather than being absorbed by a story.

Just made me want to re-read A Wrinkle in Time.

Listened to audiobook and read print. Slow to start for me but once the characters were developed, the book gelled wonderfully. Enjoyed it.

You might be able to change the past, but can you fix it?
That is the key question swirling at the center of this intergenerational time travel story, and what a weighty question it is. I'm usually pretty reluctant to read time travel stories and for some reason completely missed that element the first couple times I read the summary. This book surprised me though! While it is a time travel story it's much more a story about generational cycles, trauma, the special kind of betrayal passed from mother to daughter, mother to daughter. This story is alive with the pasts presents and futures of the women at its heart, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
