Gwenpool, the Unbelievable, Vol. 1: Believe It by Christopher Hastings

Yes, this was definitely 1000 times more awesome than I thought it would be!

A girl who loves comics, games, and other stuff, is transported to the world of the characters she reads about. And she is totally planning on making it a trip worth remembering, so she does anything, and everything, and also kicks some serious butt in the process. :P

It was a bit hard to get into, of course I already knew about the character Gwen, who hasn't heard of her? I already saw some of her (mis)-adventures. But most of it is basic stuff though.
So it was a bit strange of a beginning. For instance I still have questions on how she managed to teleport herself to this world, and if she can go back. It also seems that (later on when she meets Strange) she doesn't really want to go back, and also doesn't really mind if memories of people in her real world become fuzzy. I am curious what went on in the real world.

I just loved how she didn't care about consequences, she just went for it, no matter what happened. Which meant she blows up a lot of stuff, tries to kick some serious butt, and does all sorts of crazy stuff that was totally epic. I also can't wait to see her grow, and become more awesome. Maybe learn some more gun skills, as she loves guns, but can't shoot (at least until her training).

I also totally adore her outfit, though I can imagine it might get a bit cold at times. :P Still she picked a great costume, the colours are fun, and fit with her character perfectly.

It was definitely fun to see her break fourth wall so many times, or just break a character because she knew their backstories (or names, in case of a certain Thor).

I had a laugh at the blurb: "Could Gwenpool truly be Marvel's least responsible and least role-modely character to date? She can if she tries!" Guys, please, Gwen just does it without even trying.

The art is really amazing, I just love the designs of the characters, especially Gwen in normal mode is gorgeous. The colours are vibrant and fun.

I can't wait for volume 2 to come out, more crazy stuff please! But also more story. I can always use more story in combination with absolute silliness.

WHO IS THE CLIENT???? Great, now I need Vol. 2!

Anyway, wow, that was... really good. Like, surprisingly good! It was a lot of good fun, but still had just enough poignant moments to not be over the top, and it left so many questions to be answered! I really enjoyed this :D

I'm still not sure what to make of this book, but it was a bit more fun than I expected, so I'm giving it 2.5 stars.

The premise is that a contemporary Marvel fangirl somehow get's sucked into the Marvel universe and is self-aware about the whole thing. Her costume, choice of weapons, and 4th-wall-breakingness are where the similarities to Deadpool stop. I expected it to be more of a What If? mash-up of Gwen from Spider-Man and Deadpool. Instead, it's more of an amalgamation of Tank Girl and Harley Quinn.

Gwen Poole lacks super-powers, unless you count her knowledge of the characters and general physics/rules of Marvel comic books and her belief that, if she's in a fictional world, she need only put on the performative role of the hero in order to become practically invulnerable. After all, only the extras in comics have short lives.

The concept and target demographic are not subtle whatsoever, and the writing generally leaves much to be desired. But it's still better than so many of the flagship titles from the Big Two, so... Gwenpool deserves some respect and appreciation.

Gwenpool starts out slow and it takes a little while to get into. Once I got three comic books into this series, I started to enjoy it.
What drew me to Gwenpool was the art. Gurihiru creates fantastic art work in the comics!

I'm not going to rate this bc I honestly had no idea what was happening for the majority of it. I really only read it bc I needed a pink superhero. I do not give a single fuck about the greater MCU (other than the movies and shows that I watch with my kids) AND YET...I'm going to keep reading? It was genuinely compelling and p funny and I dug the art.

If you're looking for one of Marvel's newer comics to get into, then Gwenpool just might be it.

Pros:
-hilarious character that has no idea how to be a hero
-beautiful artwork
-wonderful cameos including Doctor Strange and Batroc
-interesting storyline

Cons
-the artwork was different in 1 or 2 spots and that was annoying

But seriously, how can you not enjoy a character who learns how to sword-fight from YouTube tutorials?

I picked this up because Chris Hastings wrote it and I was not disappointed. I stopped following Marvel in the 90s but I will pick up most anything written by him or Ryan North. Definitely funny with lots of potential.

This was really quite funny. Like way more than it had any right to be. I needed a good laugh right about now, and this definitely delivered

I really loved the art and the amount of meta-humor on hand here.
