Khaw's prose is certainly... interesting. I'm not quite sure whether or not I like it, laden as it is with simile and metaphor, but I would be willing to give her work another try. This novella, unfortunately, didn't do it for me. The overwrought prose was at odds with the way the angsty young characters spoke and the strange meta vein running through the whole thing felt out of place. It was like the story didn't know whether it wanted to be a spooky and atmospheric ghost story or a semi-satirical social commentary, and it ended up feeling disjointed. Then there was the way that things just kinda... happened. These kids stumbled around getting drunk and arguing, and then when the spooky stuff kicked off, everyone just sort of carried on being drunk and arguing. It wasn't until nearly the end of the story that anything horrific happened, and after that it wrapped up very quickly. Overall, I enjoyed the concept and some of the atmospheric descriptions, but the story never came together as a cohesive whole.
