I'm not sure what all the hate is about. The things I liked about this book seem to be the things that others hated: the gorgeous prose and the unlikeable characters that really shouldn't be friends anymore. It wasn't as shocking as I had heard, but I found it a quick read and quite entertaining.
2 stars. But five stars for that badass cover. Everything besides that was such a disappointment. All of the characters are insufferable, the writing is clunky and awkward, and the plot doesn’t deliver on anything. I’m so disappointed. I think if this had been developed just a bit more instead of just dropping us into it with no type of set up this could’ve been a little better.
Bought this book by chance because it was $5 in the Starbucks at the store. I was so excited to wait to read this book for October and honestly don’t know what to tell you. I am a horror genre fan and I loved the premise of the book but it gave us everything and nothing at the same time. I was constantly having to reread things as the narrator jumps from one train of thought to another with little to no follow up and no relation to what the heck she’s even talking about. It all just reads as a jumbled mess. The plot itself was so fast-paced that the “horror” of the ghost bride was done in like a quarter of the book with her showing up maybe a total of 3 times for a total of like 4 pages at MAX. And I know, the physical entity doesn’t have to be present to express a good creep/chill factor but there was NONE of that. The book ending was ridiculously “done” as a wrap-up that I felt like these were pages ripped out of an entirely larger novel that would offer me the rest of the story. The saving factor was Lin and his comedic quips in the faces of the horror these characters face that had me smiling because FINALLY a character who says “NOPE not doing that” when it comes to the scare genre
Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a polarizing book (for me at least.) I liked certain aspects of Khaw’s prose. However, the characters aren’t written well. Additionally, I wasn’t spooked at all. Ultimately, this book was a dissatisfying read and I wouldn’t recommend it.
Didnt enjoy the prose or how the story began. Very early DNF

I have mixed feelings on this book. I went into it with higher expectations of it being scary and action packed, but that’s not really what it was for me. It was 75% about relationship drama between this group of friends and 25% “spooky” ghost and some gore. It just wasn’t interesting to me. I was hoping the ending would make reading this worth it, but it was confusing and not very thrilling. I would try another one of Khaw’s books because I enjoyed her writing, but hopefully with a very different plot.
