I so badly wanted this to be legitimately frightening but unfortunately, it was not. Khaw’s voice is amazing, though. She really knows how to string words together to make a descriptive and exciting reading experience. I will read more of her word for her writing alone, but I wish that Nothing but Blackened Teeth was just…more.

This authors writing is not for me (if the duration of time it took me to finish this book is any indication!). She uses too many metaphors to the point where I audibly said “I get it already!” I also don’t think horror is just making grotesque comparisons to macabre ideas - it felt like the author relied on this more than an actual horror story. I’ve tried reading her other books and felt the same way. Unfortunately, I won’t be picking up more of this author’s work.
