In the crumbling, centuries-old mansion in the Japanese countryside a group of friends gathers for a wedding that feels more like a funeral. As they descend into the darkness of their own twisted relationships, they're confronted with an ancient malevolent force that seeps from the very walls. The shadows writhe and twist around them, feeding on their deepest fears and festering resentments. As they desperately try to escape the mansion's grasp, the evil presence toys with them. They quickly realize not all of them will be making it home.

I’m not usually a fan of contemporary fiction (although a few have pleasantly surprised me) and this book is exactly why. Every characters’ personally is summed up by being very over the top yelling and being sarcastic and snarky towards each other the whole time. This is their entire personality. I don’t like people who are like this in person so why would I want them in my books. Or maybe it’s because I do daycare and have spent my fair share around preteens and am over the back talk and bickering.
This book reminded me of what you get today on Netflix with the scary genre, character dynamics and dialog in movies such as bodies, bodies, bodies or the fear Street films, mixed with the atmosphere and vibe of the grudge or shutter… just not quite as scary. I also am not a fan of these type of scary movies either, so this book was doomed for me from the start.

I decided to give this book a chance since I love horror. This is a quick read; it's the story of a group of five friends who spend a night at a Heian-era mansion in Japan to celebrate a couple's wedding. It would've taken me quicker to finish this if I already knew the words I looked up on Google; what I'm trying to say that the writing style was a bit difficult for me to enjoy with English not being my first language. The setting is interesting, but I didn't really care much for the characters, but their connections to each other made me feel confused and say, "What the fuck". Giving this book only two stars because it could be better.
