This is a book I was highly anticipating for this year and honestly it was a big disappointment. The characters, while complex, were really unlikeable and hard to root for. I did like some of the discussion of typical horror tropes though and I would have maybe liked that to be expanded on a little bit. The writing was really poetic at points but was also to over the top at other points which contributed to a feeling I had of the whole book just being a little bit disjointed. The narrative became very disjointed once we got to the horror aspect of this book which made the book very confusing and in my opinion stopped some of the horror from being truly effective. However, this was a very quick read which is always nice. Ultimately, I can see why some people might really like this book but unfortunately I am not one of them.

I don't know how to feel about this book. It just felt... like nothing. No real build up and no real payoff. Premise was cool, but it ended up being a nothing burger.
The descriptions and wording were great though. That was beautifully written. Just the story itself fell flat.

The Salt Grows Heavy was one of my favourite reads last year. Alas, this one definitely can’t compare. It has the same gorgeous writing but it doesn’t match the story at all.
One of the biggest complaints people seem to have is that none of the characters are sympathetic. I don’t care about that (if anything, it made me hope I’d enjoy the book all the better despite the low ratings). It’s the story that falls completely flat, plus the setting just couldn’t convince me (which was always going to be a risk).

I was looking specifically for short horror novels when I came across this book. It turns out it was already on my TBR, so I grabbed it. The cover is incredibly creepy and I was really hoping that vibe would carry on throughout the book. And it did, to a certain extent. The book is a spin on the classic haunted house story so of course there's creepiness. But it was just kind of meh for me. The past few horror novels I have read have been really amazing so this one was a bit of a let down.
