Is it historical fiction? Is it science fiction? Is it a book on mindfulness? It IS genius. @erinentrada.bsky.social won the Newbery for this. My middle schoolers will eat this up. Heck, I was 8.5 months pregnant and scared to death on 1/1/2000 and I read this in one sitting!

A middle grade time travel story. Ridge has traveled back in time two hundred years to 1999, he meets Michael who is stealing canned food to stockpile in case the Y2K computer problems cause disasters. Ridge isn't supposed to be in the past, and all Michael can think of is finding out what happens on January first 2000. The time travel elements of this story were great.
it felt like science fiction in an unexpected setting, a small housing development in Delaware.

Read for a work event. This was ok.

The main character is HIGHLY anxious. More anxious than I am, which is a lot. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has some kind of undiagnosed anxiety disorder and the end of the book kind of makes it seem like he’s “cured” it. The other two characters were fun. The time traveling aspect was interesting. I liked it more by the end than I did in the middle, where it kind of slogged, but I probably wouldn’t read it again.

This book was the balm I didn't know I needed for my futuristic woes. To imagine a world in 200 years that is still full of smart humans. Sometimes kids books are the best. for older middle schoolers, lots of tween angst.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. I really, truly loved this one. It takes place in 1999 Delaware, where soon-to-be seventh grader Michael grapples with anxiety, particularly as Y2K looms. But when a strange boy named Ridge appears in Michael’s apartment complex, asking odd questions without giving any information about where he is from, Michael teams up with his babysitter (and kind-of crush) Gibby to help Ridge. While yes, there is some science fiction to this story, it will also appeal to realistic fiction fans. Highly recommend for grades 6-8.
