Wow? Her books just blow me away and make me feel all the feels. Michael is worried about Y2K, obsessively worried. Also, riddled by guilt because his mom got fired from her job after she stayed home to take care of him when he was sick. Only child of a single mom. Crushing on his babysitter-Gibby. Ridge appears from the future and shares some helpful philosophy for Michael. Mr. Mosley, Michael’s neighbor and pseudo-uncle dies of a heart attack. Michael works through all of this stuff. Second half was better than the beginning because that is where she starts tying together all of the threads she has so skillfully laid down.

A really fun take on a period that I grew up in *cue scary music* ....Y2K!
I did enjoy the story and found it lighthearted mostly with some serious moments that never strayed too far into thought provoking territory so I'd say it's definitely a lighter read.
The character's ongoing angst about what could happen during Y2K wasn't the most relatable (my family certainly took precautions and there was some fear there), but nothing compared to the angst/fear/dread I felt during 9-11-01.
Overall though, its a solid read and I can't go much into detail without risking spoiling some major plot points so I'd definitely recommend you check it out!

Loved these characters and the themes within it... Great book for middle schoolers who enjoy realistic fantasy (time travel).
I liked this book better than I thought I would! While I had heard of it, I never paid it much attention until it won the Newbery and is on the Mountain Laurel list for next school year. This book reads quickly when you actually get a chance to sit with it. I liked the messages from the book and found them to be good reminders, even for me as an adult. I was glad it had the final notes at the end. Otherwise, I would have been left feeling unfulfilled by the ending. This was fun for me to read as it was like stepping back into my own time machine to the 90s but I wonder how much my students will relate to that time (thank goodness the 90s are having a moment right now though). The snippets of "scholarly articles" and audio transcripts might be hard for some kids to follow and make sense of, especially since the whole concept of time travel is tricky for anyone to even attempt to understand in the first place. All in all, this was a good book, and as an adult, I enjoyed it. Hopefully, my students like it too!
