A fascinating, if a bit dated, look into criminal profiling. The author is a bit self-congratulatory throughout which gets annoying, however, the insights he garnered through his years on the job are definitely worth hearing.
Honestly written, personal story of a man who saw the worst of humanity. Really interesting if you want to learn more about the psychological aspect of true crime
I could only read one chapter at a time - it’s not a page turner.
"What is one allowed to do? ... Whatever one can get away with."
Frighteningly enough, this I think accurately sums up a repetitive violent criminal. Robert Ressler's book surpasses Mindhunter for me. It felt more informational. I love hearing how these types of offenders are pursued and how the current common practices were established for seeking them out.

It was very interesting and I do feel I now have a lot more knowledge about murderers. Because of my psychology studies I could reflect about some information in the book a little deeper, but I don'r feel like I needed this knowledge to read this book at all. I also felt like it was objective enough about the actions of the criminals, which is a good thing. Last but not least, I was sometimes a little irked by the self-praise of the author, but then again, he did accomplish a lot.
It's not like I can say the book had a good story or anything, it was just an informational non-fiction book, therefore I give 3 stars.

Interesting, especially when he describes some cases in depth. You can definitely tell this is a man reflecting back on his great career- he mentions his greatness several times, but always gives credit where credit is due. I’d be interested in an update to this book- a book about criminal profiling today with all the technology. It would also be interesting to get some updates on the cases in this book, knowing that the “wilding” case of the Chicago medical student was eventually overturned in the early 2000s.
read on the suggestion of the MFM podcast - super interesting, though obviously a little dated. HIGHLY recommend if you're into true crime; contains the right amount of gory crime details and behind-the-scenes info on the FBI
The world researched content but the author is self absorbed
