The fourth book of the DCC series sees Carl and Princess Donut survive the fifth floor of the "world dungeon," which comprises a series of individual world bubbles. Only a few crawlers are assigned to each bubble, and within each bubble three keys must be obtained in order to open the bubble (permitting travel to other bubbles) and to open access to the stairwells to the sixth floor.

In this book, Carl obtains and uses a powerful device called the Gate of the Feral Gods, with which he wreaks havoc on more than one level of the dungeon. (Read the book to find out how and which levels! It's pretty badass.)

The theme of "waking up" NPCs continues in this book. Carl ultimately manages to save a group of NPCs from their assigned fates at the hands of the showrunners and to transport them to lower levels of the dungeon. One in particular, a changeling prostitute named Juice Box, will become a major player in Book 7.

This is also the second book in a row in which Carl and Donut summon gods and/or demons, which is becoming a bad habit....

Probably of the weakest of the ones I've read so far, story needed more cohesion and felt characters got lost in the story epically with the structure and story moving at a breakneck speed. Important stuff did happen just felt should have been more focused.

Every book I worry that Carl's adventures will start to feel very routine, but that's definitely not the case. New dynamic characters, intertwined with old beloved ones and the segregated setting between bubbles keeps you on your toes. Shoutout to Juice Box and Samantha, cannot wait to see you girlies kill it next book.

I don't know if Matt had anything bigger to say in this one other than "war is hell and you're gonna contribute to it eventually" which is fair enough. It was a little rough there for a minute reading about innocent people getting bombed in their deserty town because of particular global politics...but I thought it was a fresh take on why aggression and violence will broil over eventually. It's not exactly an uplifting ideology but it is an understandable one. (also speaking of global politics, try saying someone is from The Ukraine to their face in real life. it won't go over well. But I think that's just a linguistic error and not a representation of his politics)

Ultimately, 4 books in, I have two challenges for Matt Dinniman in the coming novels:

1- Play around with gender, man! It's wild and plain unrealistic that all of these aliens have binary genders that fit in "male" and "female". That's absurd and I think Matt could have a lot of fun making up new genders.

2- Go one book without talking about sex workers or prostitutes (this will not happen)

Lots of great moment in this book
I have to give Jeff a round of applause, his voice acting is top-notch.
The last thing that Carl said before he went to the next floor gave me teary eyes.
and the epologue, OMG.

Lot of characters' development and we get a better sense of the politcs and their relationship.
It also dealt deeper into the NPC, which I enjoy very much. I feel like a NPC sometimes.
And "we are all prostitutes in one way or another", right?
