the writing annoyed me slightly from time to time (see below) and so did the characters, but overall it was a fairly enjoyable read. i still think
st clair should've broken up with ellie pretty much immediately

thoughts while reading

ch 1: anna's father is giving ✨john green✨
ch 6: does toph really seriously prefer toph to chris???
ch 8: i don't mean to be too picky or judgemental as a reader who's not an author myself, but instead of "I wonder aloud if he's also an artist", couldn't she just wonder aloud?? like...with speech bubbles?
ch 8: oh for fluff's sake stop attractioning him, he's taken
ch 12: somehow i don't think st clair is taken after all
ch 20: for goodness sake anna, NO! you do not roomshare with a boy and you absolutely do not bedshare!! ever!!
ch 21: girl i'm cackling a cute boy calls anna beautiful and girl literally just falls flat on her face
ch 21: this is why we don't bedshare
ch 22: pretty sure the author is getting our swearing and expressions wrong. in this instance it's shit not shite
ch 25: girl...pick a damn boy
ch 25: the WHAT
ch 34: this would be so much nicer if one of them wasn't TAKEN
ch 37: for goodness sake anna better not
start going out with dave
or i will strangle her
ch 38: children no pda please
ch 39: meredith?
ch 40: oh. my .gosh.
meredith likes anna

ch 42: go étienne!
ch 41: that's exactly what i thought
ch 44: she can
speak french
now?? what a slay

This book started out so well, I was really enjoying it, and then it took a steep downturn 🙁.
This whole book is major miscommunication trope the whole way through and it gets really frustrating to understand the characters actions the longer it goes on.
Anna seems to think everything is always about her and although the way St Clair treats her wasn’t always fair, she still acted like a child and made some serious mistakes of her own.
Honestly, I think I still would have enjoyed the book more had it not been for the fact that
they were cheating on Ellie the whole time basically. St Clair straight up says to Anna at the end that he was emotionally cheating on Ellie the entire school year because he just wanted to be with Anna. Why didn’t you just break up with Ellie if things weren’t right anyways?! It’s not like he didn’t have other people to support him with his ‘lonely’ excuse. I don’t care if things were not going well with Ellie, or if they never technically got together until after, to me having mutual feelings for someone else, spending all your time with them, and sleeping in the same bed together (even if nothing really happened) while everyone else is away is cheating.

It’s too bad cause I initially really liked these characters and was rooting for them but it really put a damper on the ending for me.
