I loved, loved, loved this series when I was younger. The whole telepathic, soul-bonding horses deal might strike me differently now, but this was everything I wanted in my books when I was a preteen and still of an age to covetously eye the Lisa Frank folders in Staples. There's adventure, coming of age, friendship, betrayal, magic, and even some romance (and hooray, not everyone is straight -- it's actually one of the first books I remember reading with fully textual gay relationships)! Almost afraid to read it again for fear of spoiling the memory.

At first glance, this book is Fourth Wing but with magic horses instead of dragons.
Surprisingly wonderful! I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started, but it hit every note that I love in a fantasy. Great world building, fun characters, and good political intrigue without being too confusing.
I found it especially lovely that there were time jumps in the story and that the author has allowed our main character to grow up while the story is happening. She’s not ‘magically’ getting swept through years of training in months for the sake of the plot. She’s been allowed the ‘realistic’ time it would take to learn what she needs to learn.
It also helps that she’s not a 13 year old girl the entire book.
