Wuthering Heights - Emily Brontë
‼️MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS‼️

The first and only book from Emily Brontë released in 1847, 1 year later she passed away at the age of 30. She passed away not knowing her first and only novel would go international and become 1 of famous classic victorian novel.

Fyi, i bought this book with the Indonesian translation version which is published in April 2011 by Gramedia.

Talking about how i ended up buying this book, the first time I bought this book is in March, I bought this book after reading the review on the back of the book and with thoughts that this is just a normal romance and revenge story between two lovers, and also full of self-confident that i'll definitely hate Catherine and Edgar Linton for being married and abandoned poor Heathcliff AND i'd be in Heathcliff's side. Quite funny for me to think about these thoughts again after finishing the book.

I started reading the book started from April 19 until yesterday May 16, almost a month I spend to finishing this book, actually I can finish it in fast time but I got a lot of exams so i have to stop my reading time for a while.

Back to the review, I can say this book might be best and worst book i've ever read, i gave it 4 starts as 2 for the best and other 2 for worst. This book is a whole damage for me, after reading several chapters i got to search about what genre Wuthering Heights actually and found that it was Gothic novel, which is contains some dark mystery, supernatural and madness.

Honestly while i was still reading this book, I was full of emotion and was thinking of giving this book the worst rating as a book I've ever read, the more I read it the more i hate Heathcliff, his behavior which is so inhumane and cruel to the Earnshaw family as well as Linton and his love for Catherine but after arriving at the last chapters where Heathcliff has started to change even though he is still depraved, I realize that this is the reality of this book, revenge for his unspoken love and revenge against the family he thinks has destroyed his life.

I bought and started this book with thoughts and hopes for romance but in the middle i felt a disappointment with this book because it didn't live up to my expectations but after finsihing the book and read some review from people who also read Wuthering Heights, i understand now why this book gets lot of hate and critics when it's first published in 1847.

Characters overview :

*Heathcliff, he is the adopted son of the Earnshaw family whom Mr. Earnshaw found on his way home, in the first few chapters of this book i feel very sorry for Heathcliff because he was treated so badly by Mr. Earshaw's biological children, Hindley and Catherine, though Mr. Earnshaw really adore and would get mad at Hindley and Catherine if they make fun of his foster son. This different behavior of Mr. Earnshaw to his own kids and to Heathcliff also got me mad sometimes, and i lowkey understand why Hindley is so mad and keep bullying Heathcliff, Especially when Mr. Earnshaw and Mrs. Earnshaw died, the treatment Heathcliff received was very unkind by Hindley. Eventually Heathcliff and Catherine become close day by day. He is a child who might actually be good but the treatment he received and because of his selfishness towards affection that suddenly disappeared made him grow up to be a cruel, dark, rough and like crazy person even though he is actually sane. His background is very mysterious, where he come from, his family, his siblings etc.

*Catherine Earnshaw Linton, she's also one of the most selfish character i've found in Wuthering Heights. The time when she wants to marry Edgar Linton but loves Heathcliff too, in a page she said she wants to marry Edgar because he's rich, good-looking, well educated but she doesn't want to hurt Heathcliff's heart as well. I totally agree with what Nelly Dean said here. Catherine, she is a stubborn child from the past to adulthood, she is still the same, she craves the luxury, security, and serenity of Edgar, even as she runs wild across the moors with unkempt Heathcliff.

*Hindley Earnshaw, i understood how he could be bad and evenworse, he lost his wife who he probably loved so much and felt his life was meaningless without her, i felt he wasn't that close to Catherine either, he left and came back with his wife Frances and a few moments later Catherine married and moved to Thrushcross Grange with Edgar, but he was almost as bad as Heathcliff, full of angry, bitter, jealous man.

*Edgar Linton, he's portrayed as a sweet, gentleman, loving, well educated, good-looking and kind i guess. But for Heathcliff, Edgar is such a piece of cake, Heathcliff portrayed Edgar as a weak man and wins only looks. The truth is he's quite strong.

*Isabella Linton Heathcliff, she's actually sweet and loving person but her love for Heathcliff went crazy and blind, i was kinda disappointed on how blind she was for Heathcliff, though it's not full her fault because this what Heathcliff wants, Isabella Linton to fall in love with him so he can get Thrushcross Grange.

At the end of this review, i just want to say that if you're a fan of Gothic novel, you should probably add this book to your wishlist! I had so much pressure read this book because my patience is out of limit haha...but fortunately i finished Wuthering Heights with a heavy heart knowing i'd never read this book like it's the first time. Wuthering Heights is my very first classic and gothic novel and as i said it might be best and worst book for me. After finished it, i realize that i had pretty fun journey and enjoying this book so much. It was cruel, dark, violence, somehow toxic, and obsess behavior novel but it was good. And some reminder for you all who wants to read this book to reduce your expectations about the romance, it is have some romance quotes but not the romance you've been dreaming about.

Last but not least, i recommend this book buttt every reader has different perspectives about this book, same with me have different perspectives with other's. I think that's it from me about this book. I might add some reviews later on.
