Great story and I really enjoyed how it was set up. The ending was a bit strange but all together I enjoyed this one.

This book was absolutely amazing.

Normally when I read mysteries I often work it out fairly quickly - subtle brag maybe? - but this book I was shocked with every single twist and red herring.

I did love it though. The ending was satisfactory and so interesting that I want another chapter or two about what else could happen.

I felt absolutely devastated by the truth and wish that so many things could have been different for the people involved. So many little things that could have saved these children from the life they were dealt.
It all felt so emotionally real that it read real. It read less like fiction and more like a retelling of something people would have lived before.

Recommend this to everyone.

A very clever whodunnit with complex characters and an interesting setting. Really well done.

I didn’t really get into this book until the last 20%—which honestly shocked me. I had hoped it would be a refreshing palate cleanser between the bulk of the Throne of Glass series, but sadly it missed the mark for me.

I just don’t understand the hype. It took far too long to get a feel for the characters (and there are so many), and the timeline felt scattered. I know that was intentional, but the execution left the flow choppy and disjointed. For most of the read, I found myself zoning out because I wasn’t invested in what was happening.

That said, the final stretch redeemed it slightly—the last 20% finally clicked. The pacing settled, the timeline made sense, and I was able to follow and care a little more. That boost is what nudged this to a 3-star instead of the 2-stars I’d have given the first 80%.

Overall, this one left me feeling flat.

Time to head back to my fantasy worlds where I know I’ll be swept away!

I have not heard one bad thing about this book and now I know why. The writing is phenomenal. It’s fast paced and interesting, but the character and story development does not suffer for it. The thought I kept having as I read is that the author really knows and cares about her characters. She is very intentional with them and writes them with great care. I don’t know if that makes sense. They seem real to her and she treats them accordingly.

Usually I dont love books that alternate perspectives frequently. This one does just that and often doesn’t return to character for a long time. But it didn’t bother me. Each character and storyline was important and interesting (often there is a story line readers dread getting back to and we just want to stick with the one we love). Each chapter kept my interest and moved the story along. We came back to each character in the right time.

My overall impression is that Liz Moore knows how to craft a story and has the writing chops to back it up. She knows her story and keeps track of all the many moving pieces. She also loves her characters and treats them with care. It’s obvious this book meant a lot to her.
