This was a really nice book to read after a week of reading about teen suicide and other tragic stories. It wasn't exactly happy-go-lucky...but it was a nice and unlikely story. I recommend it...I think.
Freakin amazing! (though the book uses the actual Fword throughout... i think the author is a genius... a freakin genuis)
I did not overly enjoy this book. I think, at some point, I became numb to the main character's weight issue/lack of confidence because it was mentioned every single page. I think that parents need to understand there is language in this novel and scenes where the main character is dealing with sexual feelings/racing hormones. It is a little shocking compared to other young adult novels. While I feel it is appropriate, I doubt many of my parents would be understanding. Luckily the group of males who selected this book will not be shocked nor offended (their parents might be another matter but they all signed off permission that they could read the book). I am curious to see their reactions to the book.

Re-read after a couple of years and still obsessed with this. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to read a fat character that’s not demonized or trying to lose weight, and a character with addiction that’s not demonized. Just the most amazing YA, I hope to write something like it one day. And of course Matthew Lillard’s narration is top-tier. Curt is the realest punk I ever knew cuz punk is about not giving a fuck. I love him, love T. Hail hail rock ‘n’ roll.

Fat Kid was well-written and insightful of serious adolescent body issues that are often misunderstood and applied only to eating disorders and body dysmorphia. The dynamic between Curt and Troy is very meaningful, although the conclusion of the book, for me, was a little cheap compared to the dire issues both boys face.
Great story about body image, fatness, male friendship, addiction, family and the aftermath of grief. I loved how hopeful it was, even while dealing with some pretty devastating subject matter.
TW for contemplations of suicide at a close psychic distance.

3.5 stars. It was a good, quick book that was a bit annoying at times (especially the repetition of 'fat kid') but it had a nice ending.
