An accidental reread 3 years later, I think I understand and appreciate it much more. It's come to me like a kind of Biblical epiphany honestly. Mary Oliver truly treasured and understood the purpose of and possibility offered by poetry. It's made me want to be more intentional and experimental with writing my own poetry, as well as more closely analyze the greats, from their form to their use of sound. It's a powerful form of art and while this book is short, it says all that it needs to about poetry and the writing of it. Absolutely a good source of writing inspiration.

There’s a wealth of information contained in this slim book by Mary Oliver that anyone, regardless of whether or not they are poets, will enjoy. This book has enriched my knowledge of poetry. While I appreciate its conciseness, I do wished readers were provided with more examples of the poetic devices that were discussed.

Mary Oliver is a prophetess, but she also knows her craft.

Poetry class textbook -- I love Oliver's poems, and this book was nice and short, while still having some good insights. Nothing too revolutionary tho.
