Mr. Hastings is one of the excellent historians of our time. This book does not disappoint and goes incredibly in depth to find the truth about how and what atrocities the Das Reich committed in France.

Concentrating on the days after D-Day, and how the 2nd SS Panzer division "Das Reich" attempted to reach the rest of the German army at Normandy.
Looks at the effect resistance units had against them, delaying their advance. There were different factions of these, some supported by the Allies and others by the French, with their own divisions between them.

The majority of the book looks at these factions, the raids and sabotage missions they carried out, and the effects on the movement of the Germans.
Sections dealing with Das Reichs retaliation against towns they thought were hiding resistance fighters, or supporting them, make for grim reading.

Max Hastings does a good job of collecting various first hand accounts from diaries or interviews with the people involved where possible. There are maps of the major places involved, and appendices to give further information.
