Jostein wrote one of my favourite childhood books, [b:Hello? Is Anybody There?|68645|Hello? Is Anybody There?|Jostein Gaarder|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1223647956l/68645._SX50_.jpg|1575575], so Sophie's World had been on my TBR for at least 15 years. It's a shame I waited this long to read it because I would have adored this book when I was 13-years-old and now it was a little less enjoyable.

As an introduction to philosophy, this book is a great tool. It explains relatively complicated concepts well and as concisely as possible, without leaving out a lot of nuance. I also really appreciated the strong feminist backbone of the author's approach.

My only complaint is with Sophie as a character. She starts out fine. But towards the last third of the book she becomes incredibly annoying and won't stop interrupting with obnoxious and unnecessary little remarks. Made me dock a star, that's how annoying she was. Other than that, this book is great for a pre-teen or a young teenager interested in philosophy. And not bad as a refresher for an adult, either.

Intressant innehåll (filosofidelen) men skrivet på ett så tråkigt sätt (Sofie-delen). Fuck this, I'm outta here!

the beginning philosophy was more engaging, as it turned more scientific it became less interesting. really loved the background story, Sophie was an engaging character whose personality made the plot more engaging.

As a person with no prior philosophy knowledge, I found the book really informative and enlightening. Since the subject might be boring to most people, I think Gaarder did a good job sprinkling the mystery bits on top; also, the plot twist in the middle of the story was surprising and enjoyable. The subjects began as simple as possible, and grew more complicated as our knowledge grew bigger. The text was clearly well-thought out.

I read the book at a time when I had too much free time and not much on my mind, so I didn't have to go back 5 pages every time I picked up the book from where I left it (I would've if I was reading it at a normal pace). While it's clearly not an encyclopedia, the book is a good attempt at an overview of all the major philosophy subjects in chronological order, and it serves its purpose of informing young readers(or readers inexperienced in philosophy.)

I would've given the book 5 stars if it wasn't for: 1. The lessons sometimes being too long that it felt like a textbook. 2. The feeling that some important philosophers were being left out. Some great names were mentioned but weren't explained. 3. The creepy meetings between a middle-aged stranger with a teenage girl in the early chapters. Sometimes I felt a murder/rape coming, but fortunately it never did.

2.5/5 stars

Read this book for for European History course. The philosophy part was interesting, if dry and bland, but the novel part of it all was a little to dry, a little to stilted, a little too weird (garden party, anyone??), and frankly, quite predictable (
Spoiler I knew they were book characters pretty soon after Hilde starts reading out them
). I think it would've been better as just a book about philosophy without the novel bit. An okay, slow read.

This book is more of a framework or overview of western philosophical thought with the story of Sophie overlaid.
