this book made me glad that I tend to persist and finish a book even if I am not so in to it at first.
I found the style of the illustrations and the style of the story was completely unapealling to me however I came to enjoy the story.

At first I wished this was full-color instead of just green toned, but I realized it would become overwhelming. Strange, Jim Woodring-esque creatures transform across the pages, as a guide takes a husband and wife on a luxe safari getaway. Surreal in a dark way.

I like seeing artists have fun making up various weird plants and animals. And enjoyed the incorporating of elements of actual parasites into this fantasy world.

I feel kind of silly because I just reviewed [a: Kevin Huizenga|89169|Kevin Huizenga|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1268324988p2/89169.jpg]'s Gloriana and basically said that it was more experimental than I like. But this felt pretty darn out there in a similar way. Or maybe not in a similar way. It was out there from the very beginning.
This world is cute and curvy and insidious and horrifying. This world is twisted and sexual and aesthetic and terrifying. Almost every panel feels like a maze, and lots of the imaginary flora and fauna feels like fantasy in a good and terrifying way. In some ways, this is a bit like Shaun Tan's [b: The Arrival|920607|The Arrival|Shaun Tan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1312827620l/920607._SX50_.jpg|905641] - there's the same sense of a larger metaphor, the same richness in the visual language.
In this case, there ARE words and dialogue, and the color palette is much more limited (a few different tones of green, mirroring the cover). And it gets weirder and is definitely not rated E for everyone.
Tagging the Travelogue shelf because this is positioned as a couple's vacation experience.
Intriguing, good stuff.

Feels like a fever dream. Absolutely adore the art, really great. The story, eh, who cares. Surreal and and absurd and it really worked for me. Short, but given the limited to no plot, that is no issue. The book is really just a showcase for the art and weird, otherworldly location, and just a splash of colonialism, and I'm not complaining.

I can't get over how incredibly gorgeous the art is in this book... The designs of the plant and animal life are absolutely flawless.
